Why brands outsource marketing to agencies (with examples)

09.02.2026

More companies today are choosing to outsource marketing to an agency. In fact, Marketing Week’s 2025 Survey shows that “almost two-thirds of brands have outsourced work to an agency or third party over the past 12 months [as of April 2025]”.

This trend is consistent across businesses – from scaleups to large enterprises, as well as B2B and B2C sectors.

So, the big question is, why? The short answer is that – for various reasons – digital marketing functions are under more pressure to deliver.  As such, they need extra support from outside their own walls.

Here are four clients of ours on why they chose to look for an agency versus hiring, and how we’ve helped them accordingly

1. Specialist support that comes wrapped in bonus services

Agencies either come with specialties baked in – like an SEO-specific agency – or have specialists within them. This client chose to work with an agency because they wanted a certified HubSpot partner to support them.

Our HubSpot specialist, Muyambo, helped them reconfigure their CRM. She improved their lead generation management processes and mentored them to build their existing team’s skills.

Plus, the rest of our team delivered additional marketing support that fed into this funnel. For example, blog and case study writing, social media management, email campaign delivery and more.

The alternative option was hiring a full-time HubSpot specialist in-house. However, contracting an outsourced HubSpot partner allowed them to tap into additional service benefits and save on long-term salary costs.

2. Full-service agencies plate up a variety of expertise

When Telarix came to us, it was because they wanted a reputation refresh. They felt they’d let go of their innovative positioning and wanted to reawaken it. This meant awareness building and growth marketing.

Because this was a broad long-term goal, they knew they needed more support than a single hire or specialty could offer.

A full-service agency would give them access all the experts they needed to build an integrated digital brand. Marketing strategy, content marketing, SEO, social media management, PPC, brand and design, and more.

Plus, they could benefit from more market data, MarTech and lessons learned than they could reasonably accumulate in-house. For example, we’ve seen what works on LinkedIn across a base of 100+ clients and multiple different sectors – including theirs. We’ve tested many different approaches to figure this out, so they don’t have to.

3. Getting extra capacity without extra responsibility

Another benefit of an outsourced marketing partner is that businesses have the infrastructure to run autonomously.

CameraForensics is a good example of a client who wanted to take a relatively hands-off approach to marketing. As a small and busy team, they didn’t want to be burdened with any more responsibilities. They also didn’t have the time or headspace to train and manage a new hire.

As a result, they were looking for a seasoned marketing agency.

With our full-service approach, CameraForensics knew they could get access to more specialties for less. Plus, they would get a dedicated account manager, embedded into their team.

So, Gemma, our Head of Delivery, managed all the minutiae of running marketing campaigns. From creating the long-term plans to meet business goals, to managing the delivery team and reporting on performance. She’s even helped run events and submit awards applications for them!

In return, CameraForensics just needs to lend their insights or approve final materials. It’s the perfect balance: the trust of an in-house team with the capacity of an agency.

4. Lessening the cost of leadership

Finally, a few of our clients have come to us because they wanted leadership and a new strategic direction. A fresh new face who can look at things from an unbiased, but educated, position. If you were to hire for this skill, you’d likely look at a senior marketing expert, a CMO, or a marketing director.

However, these roles don’t always deliver what scaleups need most – marketing activity. Think about a CMO. Most likely, they would create a strategy, but would need a team to put this into action.

As such, the best option is often to spend your budget on an expert agency that can do it all. It’ll cost the same as a senior hire, and less than a full in-house department.

For RiverSafe, they appreciated that a full-service agency could act as both their CMO and their marketing team. They had someone who would assess opportunities, create their strategy, and proactively implement it.
